Service explained in plain language

A metric is a measured value, an alarm evaluates that value under a configured rule, and a notification action passes a result onward. A dashboard showing high CPU does not prove that the expected alarm evaluated the same data or that a responder received its message. Diagnose the entire chain.

Setup prerequisites and starting sequence

  1. Define the symptom that should require action, the correct metric dimensions and the period and statistic to evaluate. Assign a service owner before selecting a threshold.
  2. Configure the supported alarm action and notification destination, including any subscription or receiving-system requirements.
  3. Test the delivery path with an approved non-production exercise. Document missing-data behavior, escalation and the difference between a status dashboard and an actionable page.

Start in non-production with the approved account/subscription, region and owner. Follow the linked service instructions for exact console/API options; provisioned resources may incur charges.

Example operational issue

A workload's metric exceeds an expected value, but no one receives an alert. The alarm watches a different dimension or never makes the state transition that triggers the configured action. Sending a manual email cannot prove that the real evaluation path is correct.

This is an illustrative operational example. Capture the exact error and time before making changes.

Troubleshooting: evidence before changes

ObservationFirst checkWhy it matters
Chart and alarm appear inconsistentCompare namespace, dimensions, period, statistic and evaluation windowSimilar names can refer to different time series or aggregations.
Alarm state changes but no notice arrivesReview configured action and downstream destination evidenceEvaluation success and notification delivery are separate checkpoints.
Insufficient or intermittent dataInspect missing-data treatment and the metric publication pathAbsence of measurements should not silently be interpreted as healthy operation.

Begin with status and scoped diagnostics. Sanitize shared evidence and escalate any check beyond your approved access.

Corrective action and change boundary

Correct the observed evaluation or notification mismatch with the monitoring owner. Preserve the old configuration and confirm the threshold remains tied to a meaningful response. Avoid repeated threshold reductions or broad alert disabling merely to produce a convenient green dashboard.

Verification: what proves recovery

Run an approved controlled trigger and follow its timestamp through metric, state, action and receiver acknowledgment. Confirm the alert contains the affected service and next step. Test recovery behavior as well so operators know how a resolved condition is communicated.

Monitoring, SLI, SLO and SLA

Measure alert delivery and acknowledgment as well as the underlying service indicator. A sample internal objective can set a maximum expected alert-chain delay for a test event, while the application SLO separately measures user-visible health.

SLI means the measured result; SLO means an agreed internal target. SLA means a contractual commitment with its own scope and remedy. The training targets here are examples, not vendor commitments; verify current service terms before promising an SLA.

For a scheduled alert-chain test, a sample objective is responder receipt within five minutes of the qualifying condition becoming visible to the evaluator.

SOP and escalation handover

The monitoring owner maintains evaluation; the on-call owner confirms receipt and escalation. Record the metric identity, state history, action destination and acknowledgment evidence. Review recurring noisy or unacknowledged alerts during the operational handover.

SOP means standard operating procedure. Retain owner, evidence, approved change, reversal conditions and acceptance. Escalate with sanitized errors and resource identifiers.

Beginner glossary

Dimension: a label selecting a metric series. Statistic: an aggregation such as an average. Evaluation window: the period of evidence used by an alarm.
