Context
RDS Proxy can reuse database connections across application transactions. That reuse is called multiplexing. Some application behavior requires a client to keep the same underlying database connection, so the proxy pins the session. Pinning preserves correctness, but extensive pinning can reduce the connection-saving benefit that motivated the proxy deployment.
Establish the database and workload context
Record the database engine and version, proxy name, endpoint, target group, application driver, client-pool configuration and a representative request path. Confirm that the application actually connects through the proxy endpoint. Obtain metrics and approved query telemetry without collecting SQL values that expose customer information.
Do not treat every pinned connection as an error. Some workflows deliberately depend on session-local state. The investigation should identify which behavior requires that state and whether its connection cost is acceptable.
1. Separate target health from reuse efficiency
Inspect proxy target health first. The read-only describe-db-proxy-targets operation reports target state and reason. A proxy unable to connect to its database needs a connectivity or authentication investigation before pinning analysis becomes useful.
For an available target, align client connections, database connections, borrow latency and DatabaseConnectionsCurrentlySessionPinned over the same interval. Compare the pattern with application throughput and database limits. A single high connection count without traffic context cannot distinguish normal pooling from lost reuse.
2. Identify the stateful request path
Review driver initialization and the SQL sequence used when a connection is opened or checked out. Look for session variables, temporary objects, prepared-statement behavior and other engine-specific pinning conditions. AWS documents different triggers for PostgreSQL, MySQL-family and SQL Server workloads, so avoid copying one engine's remedy into another.
Trace a small controlled request through the same driver settings. Compare the resulting pinning and connection behavior with a simpler test path. Preserve application correctness while experimenting: suppressing a state-setting statement can silently change locale, isolation or tenant behavior.
3. Interpret the evidence before tuning
| Evidence | Explanation to test | Safer next step |
|---|---|---|
| Target is unavailable | Proxy cannot establish its backend path | Read target reason |
| Pinning rises at client connection creation | Initialization creates session state | Review driver and initialization SQL |
| Long-lived clients remain pinned | Backend cannot return to shared pool | Review required session lifetime |
| Borrow latency rises without pinning growth | Capacity or transaction duration issue | Inspect database and transaction metrics |
An explicitly illustrative scenario: a web release begins setting the same session option whenever its pool opens a connection. Backend connections climb even though request volume is stable. A test using the same driver reproduces the change. The team evaluates an engine-supported proxy initialization query and validates equivalent behavior before changing the application path. Simply enlarging the pool would create more stateful clients.
Correct and verify the whole transaction
Remove unnecessary state changes or standardize initialization only when the database semantics remain correct. Use a session pinning filter only after an engine-specific review establishes that the skipped pinning cannot alter application behavior. A filter is a correctness decision, not a generic performance switch.
Run the representative workload after the change and compare latency, pinning, backend connection demand and transaction results. Include a test that relies on any intentionally retained session state. Record what improved and what remains expected.
The SOP should attach connection telemetry to release reviews involving drivers, ORMs, pools or SQL initialization. Monitor borrow latency and database headroom alongside the pinning metric. Keep the responsible application owner identified so future pinning changes can be investigated at their source.
