A backup is the beginning of recovery.

Design a restore process your team can actually follow when it matters.

Context

Backing up data and recovering a service are related but different tasks. Recovery may also require application configuration, infrastructure, dependencies and a compatible software version.

Record what each backup contains, where it is stored and who can access it. Define retention and recovery expectations with the business rather than choosing them in isolation.

Test restoration in a separate environment. Check that the restored data is usable and that the application can perform a representative operation against it. Record how long the process took and what manual steps were needed.

Update the recovery runbook when architecture changes. A useful runbook identifies prerequisites, responsible people and checks that confirm recovery has succeeded.
