Context

Environment separation helps teams understand where a change will land and which data it can affect. Define the purpose of each environment before automating it.

Use distinct configuration and credentials. Avoid sharing production database accounts with development workloads. Keep secret values outside version control while documenting the variables an application expects.

Make deployment mappings explicit in pipeline configuration. Review triggers, branch filters and target directories so a single push cannot unintentionally update multiple environments.

Test the boundaries periodically. Confirm that each environment loads the expected configuration and that access matches the people and systems that need it.
