Context
An established application can contain valuable business behavior that nobody has documented fully. Replacing its interface and database at once can turn those hidden rules into launch-day surprises. Begin by selecting a business workflow small enough to understand and important enough to validate.
Choose a boundary the team can explain
An example might be a document-download workflow rather than the entire customer account area. Identify the inputs, permission rules, data dependencies and expected result. Include support actions and scheduled work that operate on the same records.
The Strangler Fig pattern described by Microsoft is an incremental replacement approach, with routing that directs functionality to the old or new implementation. It is a useful architectural option; it does not remove the need to discover dependencies or plan data ownership.
Decide who writes each record
For the first slice, record the system of record for every important field. Avoid an undocumented arrangement in which both applications independently overwrite customer changes. If synchronization is needed, define direction, conflict handling, lag visibility and failure recovery.
Use representative copied or appropriately anonymized data in the rehearsal environment. Compare business outcomes, not only row counts. A migrated invoice may exist in both systems yet calculate or display differently.
Make cutover a decision, not a date alone
Agree evidence that permits the route to move to the new implementation: authorized users can complete the workflow, denied users remain denied, required integrations work and operating signals are visible. Set a practical observation period based on the workflow's business cycle.
Define the conditions for returning traffic to the old path. Consider changes written after cutover; redirecting traffic alone does not guarantee that the old application understands those records.
Retire dependencies deliberately
Keep a list of reports, jobs, support procedures and external clients that still depend on the legacy slice. Remove old components only after those dependencies have a verified destination. Document the point after which rollback requires a separate data restoration or reconciliation procedure.
