Context
A gateway timeout during an export does not establish that Nginx is the slow component. The proxy may simply be where a delayed application response becomes visible. Trace the request through the upstream service and its dependencies before increasing a timeout across the entire website.
Capture a request timeline
Select a reproducible operation and record its identifier, approximate start time and visible failure. Compare proxy access and error records with application logs for the same request. Establish whether the upstream connection was created, whether response data began arriving and what the application was doing meanwhile. Keep customer data out of diagnostic examples. A timestamped timeline is more useful than screenshots of unrelated CPU graphs collected after the event has ended.
Distinguish the timeout being reached
Nginx exposes different proxy timeout controls, and their meaning is not interchangeable. Review the exact directive implicated by the log and configuration. In particular, a read timeout concerns gaps between successive read operations rather than a universal stopwatch for the whole response. Inspect any additional load balancer or CDN timeout in the path. Extending one layer may merely move the user-visible failure to another layer without making the operation complete reliably.
Investigate application capacity and dependencies
Check slow database queries, queueing, exhausted connection pools and synchronous external calls associated with the operation. Determine whether the work belongs in an interactive request at all. A large report might need a durable background job and a separate download when ready. Test that proposal against the user's actual need. Compare ordinary requests during the export so a change does not improve one long operation while degrading the rest of the application.
Validate a bounded correction
Choose the smallest change supported by evidence and repeat the workload under representative concurrency. If a timeout adjustment is justified, document the operation it supports and the resource implications. Retain a previous configuration and validate proxy syntax before applying the release procedure. Monitor request errors and upstream response behavior after deployment. Close the investigation with a specific explanation of the waiting dependency, the verified correction and the conditions under which operators should reopen the issue.
