Context

A customer completing a payment and the application receiving its billing event are not the same instant. A reliable SaaS design must handle delayed, repeated or unexpected events without granting the wrong access. Define the entitlement decision separately from the transport mechanism that brings billing information into the application.

Model the business access states

Work with the product owner to define trial, active, overdue, cancelled and other relevant states. Decide which provider objects and authoritative facts support each transition. A successful browser redirect alone should not establish that an account has paid access. Record how billing status maps to application capabilities and who can approve an exception. Keep customer and tenant identity matching explicit so an event concerning one account cannot update an unrelated organization's permissions.

Authenticate and record event delivery

Stripe's webhook documentation describes signature verification and delivery behavior that integrations must account for. Use the raw request body where required by the provider's verification mechanism. Limit accepted event types and map them to the relevant account safely. Persist enough event identity and processing state to handle duplicate deliveries deliberately. Avoid logging complete payment-related payloads into general application logs when identifiers and a restricted investigation path are sufficient. Separate receiving an event from successfully applying its business effect.

Handle ordering and retry uncertainty

Design processing so a repeated event cannot create duplicate entitlements or repeated side effects. Do not assume events always arrive in the order most convenient for the application. Where necessary, reconcile against current authoritative provider state using the supported API and access controls. Distinguish transient processing failure from a malformed or unrecognized event. Give failed work a durable status and an operator route instead of acknowledging everything while silently losing the update. Record which actions are safe to retry.

Verify the complete subscription journey

Use the provider's test facilities and controlled accounts to exercise activation, renewal, failure and cancellation scenarios. Include delayed processing and a replayed delivery. Confirm that the application's access decisions match the approved business policy throughout the transition. Provide authorized support staff with a reconciliation procedure that does not require editing arbitrary database rows. The handover should explain the event record, entitlement rule and recovery owner, avoiding an unsupported claim that webhook arrival alone guarantees payment correctness or a complete billing audit.
