Shopify API Limits: Build Backpressure into Synchronization

Design Shopify synchronization around API limits, checkpoints and controlled retries. Keep catalog and order work observable when a provider throttles requests.

Context

A product synchronization that works for a small catalog can behave differently when many stores or a large update batch arrive together. Rate limits are an application design constraint, not merely an error to retry immediately. Plan how work is queued, resumed and explained to an operator when capacity is unavailable.

02

Identify the API and workload precisely

Record the Shopify API, version, operation types and store relationships used by the integration. Review the applicable limit model in Shopify's current documentation; different APIs and plans can have different behavior. Estimate work from real catalog or order activity rather than using one convenient test shop. Include the other integrations sharing the relevant provider budget where that affects capacity. Avoid publishing a universal request-per-second promise that does not reflect the actual API and account configuration.

03

Preserve progress through a bounded queue

Break large synchronization work into units with a clear checkpoint and completion record. Make it possible to resume after a process restart without starting every operation from the beginning. Decide which business updates deserve priority and whether newer changes can replace obsolete queued work. Keep tenant or store ownership explicit so one busy client cannot consume all useful processing capacity. Record pending and failed work in a form an authorized operator can inspect without opening private customer payloads.

04

Respect throttling and retry consequences

Use the response information and provider guidance appropriate to the selected API. Introduce controlled backoff rather than creating a loop that sends another burst immediately after rejection. Distinguish retryable capacity responses from authorization or validation failures. Review whether repeating a write can create a duplicate business effect and use the provider's supported mechanisms or an application reconciliation design where needed. A retry policy should have an observable limit and escalation route rather than running silently forever.

05

Verify throughput and business correctness

Exercise a representative batch, an interrupted worker and a throttled response in a controlled test setup. Check the final business state as well as the number of successful API calls. Confirm that an operator can identify what remains pending and why. Document the tested workload, limit assumptions and recovery procedure. Revisit the capacity model when the integration adopts another API version or expands its customer base, keeping synchronization behavior dependable without claiming that throttling can simply be configured away.
