Plan SQL Server recovery rehearsals with backup-chain requirements, access dependencies and business validation. Measure restoration beyond database availability.

Context

A database becoming available after a restore does not prove that the business application can use it. Logins, jobs, configuration and dependent services can still prevent recovery. Treat the rehearsal as restoration of a usable application boundary rather than a database status demonstration.

Define the recovery scenario and target

Choose the incident being tested and agree the recovery point and acceptable outage with the business owner. Record the source database version, recovery model and backup approach relevant to the scenario. Microsoft's SQL Server recovery documentation explains the supported restoration concepts and sequences; apply the guidance to the actual backup chain. Distinguish recovery to a recent state from recovery to a deliberately earlier point after an unwanted change. Make the acceptance criteria clear before selecting backup files.

Inventory required recovery material

Identify the database backups and any additional files, keys or configuration needed by the chosen method. Include authorized access to protected backup locations. Review server-level dependencies such as application logins, scheduled work and service configuration. Record their recovery owner without copying secrets into the procedure. A backup file visible to one administrator is not a tested recovery path for the on-call team. Check that the destination has compatible software and adequate capacity before the incident rehearsal begins.

Exercise an isolated application recovery

Restore through the supported procedure in an environment that cannot accidentally process production payments, send real mail or run duplicate scheduled jobs. Reconnect a controlled application instance and perform an agreed business transaction with test data. Confirm required permissions rather than granting broad administrative rights to make the first connection succeed. Capture the time spent obtaining access, provisioning the destination, restoring data and validating application behavior. Those stages all contribute to the recovery experienced by users.

Close the gaps with accountable actions

Compare the measured result with the agreed objectives and record any missing dependency. Assign a person and follow-up date to slow or undocumented steps. Verify that normal backup operations and monitoring continue after changes prompted by the exercise. Repeat the rehearsal after major upgrades or changes to encryption and storage. The final runbook should be usable by another authorized engineer and describe the tested recovery boundary, including limitations, rather than presenting a successful restore message as a guarantee of complete business continuity.
