Service overview
A database migration succeeds when the destination data and application behavior are accepted together. Clouvenix plans migrations across supported source and target platforms by reviewing schema, extensions, queries, transfer methods and change capture requirements. We define reconciliation rules before the move, rehearse with representative data and establish a cutover decision. The engagement keeps database ownership and application readiness visible throughout the transition.
When this service is useful
This engagement is useful when a database migration needs stronger evidence than a successful copy job. It fits changes between environments, platforms or database arrangements where application owners must decide whether the destination can be accepted. We define validation around structure, representative data and business transactions, keeping the source of truth and the cutover decision under explicit customer ownership.
Design and operating decisions
Validation design and representative evidence
We identify which schemas, tables, relationships and business records matter to acceptance. Counts and checksums can expose differences, but their meaning depends on transformation rules and the comparison point. Customer owners review expected differences and representative transactions so a technically equal row count is not mistaken for proof that the application behaves correctly.
Change capture and cutover boundaries
Validation must account for data changing while migration work is running. We document the source and destination states being compared, the synchronization or freeze approach and the point at which the source stops accepting relevant writes. Rollback decisions include any writes made after cutover, since returning to the old endpoint alone may lose or split business activity.
Scope and deliverables
- Source and target compatibility assessment
- Schema and application-dependency inventory
- Transfer and synchronization method selection
- Row, aggregate and business-record validation
- Cutover, fallback and handover runbooks
Delivery approach
1. Define compatibility and acceptance
Identify engine features, extensions, jobs, client drivers and business records that matter. Agree how counts, values and application transactions will be reconciled.
2. Rehearse the transfer
Run the selected export, replication or conversion path in an approved environment. Measure transfer behavior and resolve schema or application incompatibilities before the final window.
3. Execute the cutover decision
Coordinate writes, final synchronization and application routing under the reviewed plan. Record validation evidence and the conditions for accepting or rejecting the destination.
Illustrative engagement
An illustrative project could validate a business database moving to a new managed platform. We agree a dataset and comparison point, inspect schema differences and run representative record checks before testing application transactions. A rehearsal includes the final synchronization and the customer's accept-or-stop decision. Any accepted transformation is documented rather than treated as unexplained mismatch. The resulting report supports a migration decision under tested conditions without promising that every possible application behavior has been exhaustively compared.
Acceptance evidence
| Area | Evidence reviewed |
|---|---|
| Data | Agreed counts, checksums or business aggregates reconcile within explicitly accepted rules. |
| Application | Representative reads and writes work against the destination with the intended permissions. |
| Cutover | Write authority, final synchronization and fallback decisions have named owners and recorded checkpoints. |
Before we start
Provide source and target access, schema and size inventories, application owners, data-handling requirements and an acceptable write-interruption window. Licensing and compatibility constraints are reviewed early.
Planning the scope
Scope depends on database engines, data size, transformation rules, write activity and application diversity. Access to representative records and test owners is essential. Discovery distinguishes validation from migration implementation, source-data cleanup and application redevelopment, with the planned cutover window and acceptable evidence agreed before large comparisons or production decision checkpoints are scheduled.
Handover and ownership
Handover includes the validation plan, reusable checks, evidence and an exception register with customer decisions. We identify the exact source and destination states examined and the people authorized to accept remaining differences. Operators receive cutover and recovery prerequisites, while the application owner retains approval of business correctness and any data change that requires domain knowledge.
Ongoing operations
After cutover, the team needs an agreed observation period and ownership of new discrepancies, failed jobs and application symptoms. We document which checks can be repeated and when the old environment may be retired. Continuing monitoring, data repair and application incident coverage are scoped separately so the migration acceptance does not imply indefinite responsibility for unrelated data issues.
Boundaries and support
Zero downtime and cross-engine compatibility are not assumed. Changes written after cutover complicate fallback and require an explicit reconciliation plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can you migrate between different database engines?
We first assess feature, schema and query compatibility. Conversion and application changes may be needed, and the engagement records unsupported or high-risk dependencies.
How do you prove the data moved correctly?
Validation combines agreed technical comparisons with business-record and application checks. A successful import command alone is not sufficient acceptance evidence.
What happens if the cutover is rejected?
The plan defines when writes stop, which database remains authoritative and how application routing returns. New writes on the destination must be handled explicitly before fallback.
