Service overview
More telemetry is not automatically more visibility. Clouvenix helps application teams instrument the request and background-job paths that matter to users. We scope OpenTelemetry libraries, collectors, context propagation and export behavior around your runtime and chosen backend. The engagement includes data sensitivity, cardinality and collection overhead, with acceptance based on whether an operator can investigate a representative failure across the application boundary.
When this service is useful
This service helps teams understand application behavior across requests and dependencies using OpenTelemetry instrumentation. It is useful when logs are isolated, traces break between services or monitoring cannot explain a failed customer transaction. We begin with specific diagnostic questions and a representative request path, so telemetry is designed to support investigation instead of simply generating more data in another dashboard.
Design and operating decisions
Instrumentation boundaries and context
We identify where requests enter, which services and background operations they cross and where useful context is lost. Automatic and explicit instrumentation are evaluated against the runtime and diagnostic need. Service naming and context propagation require a consistent convention so traces can be interpreted across deployments without exposing sensitive application values unnecessarily.
Collection, sampling and data handling
The collection path needs clear responsibility for processing, export, access and failure behavior. Sampling and attribute choices influence both usefulness and volume. We review data sensitivity and backend constraints, then test whether operators can answer an agreed question without creating unbounded labels, excessive noise or an undocumented dependence on one telemetry destination.
Scope and deliverables
- Critical-path instrumentation planning
- SDK and collector configuration
- Trace-context propagation across services
- Sampling, attribute and sensitive-data review
- Backend integration and investigation handover
Delivery approach
1. Choose the investigation questions
Identify a real request or job failure that currently takes too long to diagnose. Map service boundaries and decide which signals and attributes are necessary.
2. Instrument a bounded workflow
Add the agreed instrumentation and collection path in a staged environment. Check context propagation, export failures and the treatment of sensitive request data.
3. Validate the operator experience
Trace an induced failure through the selected workflow, review signal volume and overhead, and document the queries or dashboards operators use to investigate it.
Illustrative engagement
For example, an API team may see elevated latency but be unable to determine whether it originates in the application or a downstream dependency. A scoped project could instrument one request path, preserve trace context across the relevant services and export useful spans through a reviewed collection route. A controlled dependency delay then tests whether an operator can identify the affected segment. Acceptance focuses on that investigation and the handling of telemetry data, not an arbitrary count of emitted metrics or spans.
Acceptance evidence
| Area | Evidence reviewed |
|---|---|
| Correlation | A representative request can be followed through the agreed service boundaries. |
| Data control | Selected sensitive fields are excluded or treated according to the approved telemetry policy. |
| Usefulness | An operator can identify the induced failure using the delivered signals and investigation instructions. |
Before we start
Provide application source access, runtime details, telemetry-backend ownership, a sample workflow and data-handling requirements. Exporter credentials remain in the approved secret store.
Planning the scope
Effort depends on languages, runtime versions, service boundaries, existing telemetry and access to the destination backend. Some diagnostic questions require code changes or customer approval of data handling. Discovery separates instrumentation from full monitoring-platform replacement and ongoing incident response, selecting a useful request path and acceptance scenario before expanding coverage across the application estate.
Handover and ownership
Handover provides instrumentation and collector configuration, naming conventions, sensitive-data decisions and an operator walkthrough of the agreed investigation. We identify which teams maintain application instrumentation and which operate the telemetry backend. The customer receives known coverage gaps and volume assumptions, giving future services an onboarding pattern without implying that every possible application failure has already been instrumented.
Ongoing operations
Telemetry must be maintained as code paths, dependencies and deployment names change. Operators should review missing signals, noisy attributes and collection failures alongside application needs. We document ownership for those tasks and for data access, while ongoing backend operation, dashboard development and response coverage are scoped explicitly around the customer's investigation and support requirements.
Boundaries and support
Instrumentation does not automatically define business SLOs or provide incident response coverage. Backend licensing, retention costs and broad application refactoring are separately agreed.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use our existing monitoring backend?
We review its supported ingestion path and the application runtimes involved. Backend-specific limitations and ownership are included in the integration scope.
Will tracing expose customer data?
The instrumentation plan identifies permitted attributes and sensitive fields. We validate the selected data treatment before extending collection.
Does every request need to be traced?
Sampling and retention follow the investigation needs and system constraints. We test a representative policy rather than assuming maximum collection is always useful.
