Service overview

GitOps is useful when the desired application state and the authority to change it are clear. Clouvenix scopes Argo CD around repository structure, cluster access, application grouping and the actual promotion process. We help teams distinguish build pipelines from cluster reconciliation, then validate a bounded deployment workflow. Drift, failed synchronization and emergency changes receive explicit operating procedures rather than being treated as automatic rollback problems.

When this service is useful

This engagement fits Kubernetes teams that want deployment state to be reviewable in Git and reconcilable through Argo CD. It is useful when environments drift or deployment ownership is ambiguous. We assess repository structure, application dependencies and operator responsibilities before automation, so reconciliation implements a deliberate release model rather than repeatedly enforcing configuration that nobody has agreed to own.

Design and operating decisions

Repository and application boundaries

We decide which configuration belongs to an application, which belongs to a platform and how environment differences are expressed. Repository access and review rules form part of the deployment boundary. The structure should let an operator identify the desired version and owner without requiring a single large repository change for every unrelated platform action.

Reconciliation policy and recovery

Automatic reconciliation, pruning and self-healing have different operating consequences. We agree their use against application behavior and test the failure path. Emergency changes need a documented route back into the desired state, while rollback must consider database or external side effects that a Git revert alone cannot safely reverse.

Scope and deliverables

  • Application and repository ownership design
  • Argo CD installation and access review
  • Environment promotion and manifest organization
  • Synchronization, health and drift policies
  • Recovery procedures and operator handover

Delivery approach

1. Define the desired-state boundary

Identify which resources Git owns, who reviews changes and how image revisions are promoted. Map cluster credentials and existing deployment tools before migration.

2. Implement a staged application

Configure the selected Argo CD application structure and access controls. Validate synchronization and health behavior using a representative workload.

3. Exercise drift and recovery

Introduce an approved test divergence or failed change. Document reconciliation choices, emergency procedures and the limits of reversing manifests after data changes.

Illustrative engagement

An illustrative project could introduce Argo CD for one stateless service whose deployment currently relies on a manual command. We establish the repository path, environment values and access model, then validate synchronization into a test cluster. The exercise includes an intentional drift and an unhealthy release so operators can observe reconciliation and decide on recovery. Stateful migrations remain separately coordinated. Acceptance demonstrates a repeatable deployment route and clear ownership, rather than assuming every workload should immediately use unrestricted automatic synchronization.

Acceptance evidence

AreaEvidence reviewed
OwnershipThe application’s desired configuration and approving repository are identifiable.
ReconciliationAn approved change reaches the intended cluster and an induced divergence is handled according to policy.
RecoveryOperators can distinguish a manifest reversal from recovery of persistent application state.

Before we start

We need cluster access, deployment repositories, image-release conventions, secret-management requirements and a workload owner. Decide which existing controllers remain authoritative before enabling synchronization.

Planning the scope

Scope depends on cluster and application count, repository organization, secret management, deployment tooling and environment dependencies. Existing charts or manifests may need preparation. Discovery separates GitOps adoption from application redesign, cluster replacement and database migration, choosing representative workloads and acceptance exercises before broader reconciliation policies or repository conventions are enforced across the platform.

Handover and ownership

Handover includes the repository conventions, application definitions, access controls and runbooks for drift, failed synchronization and emergency changes. We show operators how to identify the intended and observed application state. The customer receives the remaining onboarding backlog and a record of any manual dependencies, with responsibilities for Git changes, platform operation and application acceptance explicitly assigned.

Ongoing operations

After rollout, operators must review failed synchronization, repository access and changes to deployment dependencies. Desired state is only useful when it remains maintainable and tested. We define owners for platform upgrades, application onboarding and recovery procedures, while ongoing GitOps operation and incident coverage are scoped around the customer's team structure and application support needs.

Boundaries and support

Git reconciliation does not reverse external side effects or database writes. Secret storage, multi-cluster tenancy and continuous platform support are additional explicit scope choices.

Frequently asked questions

Does Argo CD replace our build pipeline?

It normally addresses deployment reconciliation rather than application compilation and testing. We define the handoff from a built image to the reviewed desired-state repository.

Can you support several environments?

Yes. Repository organization, credentials, promotion rules and cluster boundaries are designed around the environments and their owners.

What happens to emergency manual changes?

The operating model defines who can make them, how reconciliation is controlled and how the accepted change returns to the source of truth.
