Service overview
Infrastructure drifts when console changes, emergency fixes and automated tools update the same environment without a shared operating process. Clouvenix assesses the relationship between configuration code, state and deployed resources. We help teams detect meaningful divergence, assign ownership and decide whether to change the environment or update the declared configuration. The work treats recovery access and legitimate exceptions as part of the process instead of automatically reverting every difference.
When this service is useful
This engagement helps teams detect and manage differences between infrastructure definitions and deployed resources. It is useful when manual changes accumulate or an infrastructure plan produces unexpected results. We review the actual source of authority and operating workflow, connecting detection to investigation, approval and reconciliation so a drift alert leads to an understood decision rather than an automatic and potentially disruptive overwrite.
Design and operating decisions
Ownership, state and detection boundaries
We identify which resources are managed by code, which remain external and where state is stored and protected. Detection must use the correct environment and permissions. Imports, provider behavior and ignored attributes can affect results, so representative differences are validated before the customer relies on a scheduled report as complete coverage of the estate.
Reconciliation and emergency changes
Not every difference should be removed immediately. An emergency production change may need to be incorporated into code, while an unintended change may need reversal. We define review authority, evidence and stop conditions for each route. The workflow preserves a clear audit trail and avoids allowing routine drift detection to obtain unnecessary permission to alter production.
Scope and deliverables
- Configuration and state-ownership inventory
- Read-only drift-detection workflow
- Exception and emergency-change review process
- Approved import or remediation planning
- Environment reconciliation and operator handover
Delivery approach
1. Identify sources of authority
Map infrastructure repositories, state backends, administrators and other controllers. Record resources that are intentionally outside the selected code-management boundary.
2. Establish the detection baseline
Run approved read-only comparisons and review differences with resource owners. Distinguish real changes from provider behavior, ignored attributes or stale state assumptions.
3. Validate selected reconciliation
Apply a reviewed correction or configuration update in a safe sequence. Document acceptance, exception ownership and how emergency changes return to the normal workflow.
Illustrative engagement
An illustrative engagement could address an environment where administrators change firewall rules manually and the next infrastructure run unexpectedly reverses them. We map managed resources, establish a reviewed detection job and test an intentional difference in nonproduction. The customer then decides whether to update the code or restore the agreed configuration. Emergency changes receive a documented reconciliation route. State repair, broad resource import and an estate-wide infrastructure rewrite remain separate tasks if they exceed the initial detection and review scope.
Acceptance evidence
| Area | Evidence reviewed |
|---|---|
| Detection | The selected comparison identifies an approved test divergence without making an unreviewed infrastructure change. |
| Ownership | Each reviewed drift item has a remediation, accepted exception or additional-investigation decision. |
| Reconciliation | The selected correction aligns the agreed source of truth and environment while preserving required service behavior. |
Before we start
Provide infrastructure repositories, state-backend ownership, cloud read access and change records. Any state modification or resource replacement needs separately approved implementation access.
Planning the scope
Scope depends on infrastructure tools, providers, state organization, resource coverage and existing delivery processes. Missing or unhealthy state can require preparation. Discovery separates drift management from full infrastructure adoption, unrestricted state recovery and application migration, selecting environments and representative differences before detection jobs or production reconciliation behavior are introduced across the estate.
Handover and ownership
Handover provides the managed-resource inventory, state and access requirements, detection configuration and reconciliation instructions. We identify who reviews reports and who can authorize an apply operation. Customer operators practice investigating a representative difference and receive known coverage limits, giving future infrastructure changes a traceable route without depending on a single engineer's knowledge of hidden manual adjustments.
Ongoing operations
After delivery, new resources and provider changes can alter detection coverage or produce new kinds of differences. Reports need an owner and a clear route for legitimate exceptions. We document review and maintenance responsibilities, while ongoing reconciliation work, infrastructure development and incident coverage are explicitly scoped according to the customer's change and operating requirements.
Boundaries and support
Detection does not authorize automatic deletion or replacement. Terraform state operations, provider upgrades and unmanaged legacy resources may require additional migration or adoption work.
Frequently asked questions
Will you automatically undo console changes?
Only an explicitly approved policy could authorize that behavior. The baseline process reviews ownership and impact before deciding how a difference should be reconciled.
Can existing resources be brought under Terraform?
An adoption or import scope can be defined after checking resource identity, configuration support, state ownership and potential replacement behavior.
How are emergency fixes handled?
The operating model records who can make the change, how it is reviewed afterward and how accepted configuration returns to the normal source of truth.
