Service overview

An application restore needs more than a copy of Kubernetes resources. Clouvenix maps the cluster dependencies, persistent data, secret access and external systems required for a selected application to run. We review backup-tool and storage-driver capabilities, define recovery order and test an approved restore target. Acceptance follows the business transaction and data state, with clear records of what the backup and recovery method cannot cover.

When this service is useful

This engagement helps teams build and rehearse a recovery path for Kubernetes-hosted applications. It is useful when cluster backups exist but the application recovery sequence has not been demonstrated. We map manifests, persistent data, secrets and external services together, making clear which parts of the recovery are provided by a backup tool and which require application or platform decisions.

Design and operating decisions

Recovery unit and dependency coverage

We identify the application boundary and the configuration, data and services required to make it usable. Cluster resources and persistent volumes may have different backup and consistency requirements. Customer owners define the acceptable data point and representative business checks, with dependencies outside the cluster recorded explicitly so the recovery scope remains understandable.

Destination readiness and restore order

The target needs compatible platform capabilities, identity, storage and network access before restored workloads can function. We define the sequence and manual decisions, then rehearse them in an isolated environment where possible. Recovery of a running pod is distinguished from recovery of a working application, with evidence for the user journey and selected data checks.

Scope and deliverables

  • Application and cluster-dependency inventory
  • Resource and persistent-volume backup assessment
  • Secret and external-dependency recovery planning
  • Isolated restore and application validation
  • Recovery-order and operator runbook delivery

Delivery approach

1. Define the recoverable application

Identify namespaces, CRDs, controllers, storage, identities and external dependencies. Agree a recovery point and application consistency requirements before selecting a backup method.

2. Prepare the recovery target

Validate compatible controllers and storage capabilities in an isolated cluster or approved target. Arrange authorized access to required encryption and secret material.

3. Rehearse application restoration

Restore in the reviewed order, verify persistent records and run the agreed transaction. Document observed recovery behavior, missing dependencies and follow-up remediation.

Illustrative engagement

An illustrative project could test recovery of a stateful application into a prepared replacement cluster. We restore the agreed configuration and data, re-establish the necessary secret and network paths and run representative user transactions. The exercise records failed assumptions and manual steps, including dependencies outside Kubernetes. Observed timings are reported with their conditions. Remaining work may include application-consistent backups or external-service recovery, which become explicit actions before the customer relies on the plan for a wider disaster scenario.

Acceptance evidence

AreaEvidence reviewed
CompletenessThe selected recovery inventory includes required resources, data and external dependencies with explicit exclusions.
CorrectnessRestored application records and a representative transaction match the agreed recovery point.
RepeatabilityAn operator can follow the documented restore order and identify prerequisites before an incident.

Before we start

Provide manifests, controller inventories, storage-driver details, backup access and an isolated target. Application owners must define consistency and acceptance for stateful workloads.

Planning the scope

Scope depends on workload diversity, persistent storage, backup tooling, external services and the readiness of a recovery environment. Application owners must define meaningful data and transaction checks. Discovery separates Kubernetes recovery engineering from a complete business continuity program, application redesign and unlimited emergency response, agreeing representative workloads and the exercise boundary before implementation begins.

Handover and ownership

Handover provides the recovery dependency map, backup coverage, destination prerequisites and an operator-oriented runbook with test evidence. We identify who authorizes recovery and who validates data and business behavior. Customer operators rehearse the agreed decision points and receive a prioritized gap register, making the remaining limitations visible alongside the parts of recovery that have been demonstrated.

Ongoing operations

Recovery plans need review after changes to storage, cluster versions, identity or application dependencies. Operators should investigate failed backups and repeat representative restores at an agreed cadence. We document maintenance and test ownership, while ongoing backup administration, recurring exercises and incident recovery coverage are explicitly scoped around the customer's application and platform operating requirements.

Boundaries and support

Storage snapshots and resource exports have platform-specific limits. Recovery of external databases, identity systems or third-party services must be explicitly included or assigned to another owner.

Frequently asked questions

Is backing up manifests enough?

Usually the application also depends on data, controllers, identities and external services. Discovery identifies those requirements and the recovery order for the selected workload.

Can you restore into a different cluster?

We assess version, controller, networking and storage compatibility first, then validate the approved destination through a representative recovery exercise.

Will secrets be copied into reports?

No. The plan records how authorized operators obtain required secrets or encryption keys without exposing their values in ordinary reports or logs.
